Acid-base theory
Broenstedt acid-base reaction
Exercise 3

What are the reactions that occur when the following solutions are mixed?
Calculate also the $pH$ obtained after the reaction.
a) $500\; mL$ $H Cl$ $0.10\; M$ and $500\; mL$ $NaOH$ $0.050 M$
$ H_3O^+$ $ +$ $ OH^-$ $\rightarrow $ $ H_2O$ $ + $ $H_2O $
$pH$ $ = $ $1.60$
b) $500\; mL$ $H Cl$ $0.10\; M$ and $100\; mL$ $NH_3$ $0.20\; M$
$ H_3O^+$ $ +$ $ NH_3$ $\rightarrow $ $ H_2O$ $ + $ $NH_4^+ $
$pH$ $ = $ $1.30$
c) $500\; mL$ $H Cl$ $0.10\; M$ and $500\; mL$ $NaOH$ $0.10\; M$
$ H_3O^+$ $ +$ $ OH^-$ $\rightarrow $ $ H_2O$ $ + $ $H_2O $
$pH$ $ = $ $7.00$
d) $500\; mL$ $CH_3COOH$ $0.10\; M$ and $500\; mL$ $NaOH$ $0.20 \;M$
$ CH_3COOH$ $ +$ $ OH^-$ $\rightarrow $ $ CH_3COO^-$ $ + $ $H_2O $
$pH$ $ = $ $12.70$
e) $500\; mL$ $H_2S$ $0.10\; M$ and $500\; mL$ $NaOH$ $0.10\; M$
$ H_2S$ $ +$ $ OH^-$ $\rightarrow $ $ HS^-$ $ + $ $H_2O $
$pH$ $ = $ $11$
