The solid white ionic substances are constituted of an assembly of colourless anions and cations, the colour of colored ionic substances is often (not always !) a superposition of the colors of their anions and cations.

Examples:

$Ba^{2+}(ClO_4^-)_2$, Barium perchlorate is white. $(NH_4^+)_2CO_3^{2-}$, Ammonium carbonate is white $Fe^{3+}(Cl^-)_3$, Iron(III) chloride is ochre in colour
