Alkenes: Oxydation reactions

Mild oxydation

This oxidation is carried out in an aqueous medium with a weak oxidant such as perbenzoic acid $C_5H_5CO_2OH$ or $O2$ (with catalyst) or diluted potassium permanganate $KMNO_4$

There is produced a diol (2 alcohol functions juxtaposed)

Strong oxydation

This oxidation is carried out in an aqueous medium by a strong oxidant such as potassium permanganate $KMNO_4$ ( with concentrated with sulfuric acid) or ozone $O_3$

There is a break leading to two carbonyl groups (aldehyde or ketone function on the carbons bearing the double bond)
