Infrared spectroscopy: exercises

Exercise 1

Given the following spectrum of a substance containing $C,H$ et $O$, answer questions ( arrows above !):

In what kind of bond is engaged the oxygen atom?

- No large peak between $3200$ and $3400 cm^{-1}$: $O-H$ excluded, therefore no alcohol, no carboxylic acid. - Peak at $1700 cm^{-1}$: $C=O$, so it may be and aldehyde, ketone or ester.

Why must we exclude the aldehyde function?

Peaks at $2720$ and $2820cm^{-1}$ are missing !

Conclusion?

Ketone or ester !
