Exercise 10

Is desired 3-methylbutylethanoate , a compound with banana flavour. Write the equation of the reaction by means of semi-structural formulas!

$CH_3COOH+HOCH_2CH_2CH(CH_3)CH_3$ $\begin{matrix} H^+ \\ \leftrightarrows \end{matrix}$ $CH_3COOO(CH_2)_2CH(CH_3)CH_3$

A mixture of $0.276\;mol$ alcohol with $0.525\;mol$ acid is heated at reflux in the presence of $H_2SO_{4\;conc}$ a) Calculate the composition of the equilibrium mixture, if the equilibrium constant is 4.

Let $x$ be the number of moles of ester obtained at equilibrium: $\frac{x\cdot x}{(0.276-x)(0.525-x)}$ $=$ $4$ $x$ $=$ $0.231$ $n_{alcohol}$ $=$ $0.276-0.231$ $=$ $0.045$ $n_{acid}$ $=$ $0.525-0.231$ $=$ $0.294$ $n_{ester}$ $=$ $0.231$ $n_{water}$ $=$ $0.231$

b) What is the yield of this reaction ?

$\rho$ $=$ $\frac{0.231}{0.276}$ $=$ $0.837 $

c) When heating was stopped. we managed to extract $0.191\;mol$ ester from the reaction mixture. Had it reached equilibrium?

As $0191 $ $ \lt $ $0.231 $ (theoretical product), the equilibrium was not reached.
