Chemical equilibrium
Exercise 5
At $800^oC$, consider the equilibrium:
$CaCO_3(s)$ $CaO(s)$ $+$ $CO_2(g)$,
$K_p$ $=$ $0.220 $ atm
Calculate $[CO_2]$
$K_p$ $=$ $p_{CO_2}$
$p_{CO_2}$ $=$ $0.220$ atm
$p_{CO_2}$ $=$ $[CO_2]\cdot R\cdot T$
$[CO_2]$ $=$ $\frac{p_{CO_2}}{R\cdot T}$
$= \frac{0.220}{0.082\cdot 1073.15}$
$= 2.5\cdot 10^{-3}\frac{mol}{L}$
.. which explains why volcanism liberates $CO_2$ !!
