A gun used by a chemist: Lavoisier's "analysis" of water
Write down Lavoisier's reaction using names of substances and formulas, then equilibrate that reaction.
Could you say that strictly speaken, this is an "analysis" ?
Water (H2O) and iron (Fe) react to form hydrogen
(H2) and iron(III)oxide (Fe2O3)
$3H_2O$ $+$ $2Fe$ $\longrightarrow$ $3H_2$ $+$ $Fe_2O_3$
One of the products of this reaction is not an elementary substance. Strictly speaken, this reaction is nor an "analysis"!
The apparatus of Lavoisier
"Lavoisier disposed a gun barrel filled with iron nails (F)
in a carbon furnace and heated it getting red-hot. Then he let pass water vapour produced in a retort (A) through that barrel.
Hydrogen was collected at (H), the iron nails were weighed after reaction.
Lavoisier saw that they got rusty and weighed more than before the reaction.
